The story of Scientology began in 1950 with the publication of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health by L. Ron Hubbard. This remarkable book offered something never before available a workable technology of the mind that could be used to improve anyones life and to enable him to better understand himself and others.
Dianetics was instantly and lastingly embraced, its popularity both immediate and enduring. By the end of the 20th century, the original book was in its 50th printing with sales exceeding 18 million copies. Notwithstanding all the miracles and advances this new methodology brought to the field of human behavior, important outstanding questions motivated further breakthroughs. What was man? Was there a distinct individual identity apart from the body and the mind?
L. Ron Hubbard discovered that a person is neither a body nor a mind, but a spiritual being, independent of both. This spiritual being uses the mind and body to interact with the physical universe. These realizations about the human spirit complemented the discoveries about the mind he had communicated in Dianetics and provided for the first time a full understanding of the spiritual nature of man and his activities.
Thus, the Scientology religion was born.
