Natural disaster may be a way of life in Indonesia, where devastation from torrential rains and earthquakes are commonplace, but the Scientology Disaster Relief Team has brought real help to the people of this island nation.

While the world watched in shock in December 2004 as the estimates of the dead in this Island country approached 10% of the pre-tsunami population, a team of Scientology Volunteer Ministers raced to the disaster zone in Sumatra to help the survivors put their lives back together again.

Training tens of thousands on the simple techniques contained in the Scientology Handbook, by L. Ron Hubbard, the volunteers, who came from Australia, Europe, Africa and the Americas, brought help to hundreds of thousands in Medan and Banda Aceh. Many stayed on for months after the disaster was over and when they returned to their homes they left behind a team of dedicated Indonesian volunteers to carry on the work they had begun.

And when, once again, the media reported tragedy this May, from a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck the island of Java, the team of Scientology Volunteer Ministers who traveled to the island was joined by Indonesian members of the Scientology Disaster Relief Center of Medan.

Although the first few days were dedicated to caring for the physical needs to the injured and their families, a corps of Scientology volunteers stayed on, to train the local residents on Scientology disaster relief techniques, which focus on the emotional and spiritual needs of the people.

The team delivers seminars and workshops to schools, disaster relief centers and community groups. They provide training in Scientology assists and Dianetics auditing , not only helping people overcome the effects of trauma but giving them the tools to help others whenever disaster strikes.

The Scientology Disaster Relief Team delivers a seminar to a school in Yogyakarta, on the Island of Java.

Assists are techniques developed by L. Ron Hubbard. They operate on the principle that one tends to withdraw mentally or spiritually from an injured area. Only by restoring communication with this area can one bring the spiritual element into healing, thereby greatly speeding the healing process. Assists are used to alleviate stress, or to orient a confused or distraught individual to his present environment.

Dianetics: The word Dianetics comes from the Greek words dia, meaning "through", and nous, meaning "soul," and is defined as what the soul is doing to the body. Dianetics thus helps provide relief from unwanted sensations and emotions, accidents and psychosomatic illnesses (ailments caused or aggravated by mental stress).

Auditing: the application of Dianetics or Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. An auditor is a person trained and qualified in applying Dianetics and/or Scientology processes and procedures to individuals for their betterment; called an auditor because auditor means one who listens.
