20 Sep 2006 — Drug-Free Marathoners Honored at a Banquet in Hungary

Educating tens of thousands of children and teens through sports, lectures and events, they are proving that something can be done about the drug problem.

The members of the Drug-Free Hungary Marathon 2006 were honored this week with a banquet attended by over a hundred officials and community leaders.

Members of parliament, mayors and government drug prevention committees, police officers, Olympians and other sportsmen were among those who came to express their appreciation for the work the marathoners have done and encourage them to carry on.

The 2006 Hungarian anti-drug Marathon lasted for 42 days and covered 2088 kilometers, traveling through 19 counties and 126 towns and cities.

The purpose of the Marathon – which lasted for 42 days this year and covered 2088 kilometers, traveling through 19 counties and 126 towns and cities – was to call public attention to the dangers of drugs through sports, lectures and events, and to demonstrate that something can be done about the drug problem.

And they certainly accomplished their purpose this year, distributing nearly 25,000 booklets and 32,000 fliers. They swore in 9,823 youth as new Drug Free Marshals – an anti-drug group where the only requirement is that members pledge to live drug-free lives. And they got their message across to people all over Hungary through over 100 articles, radio shows and TV spots during the course of the Marathon.
