In 1976, L. Ron Hubbard launched the Volunteer Ministers program with an essay titled, "Religious Influence in Society," in which he wrote:
"...a Volunteer Minister is a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.
"A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well."
Scientology Volunteer Ministers came to Pondicherry, in the Tamil Nadu region of India two years ago in response to the urgent need for volunteer help in the wake of the December 2004 tsunamis.
After working for months to help the people of the region, a team of the volunteers decided to stay on, to make Scientology technology available to all the people of the area, not only to help them come through the disaster but to enrich their lives with the many effective solutions Scientology has to offer.
One of the most popular services they provide has to do with the subject of study.
Although it is universally recognized that education is key to a child's future there has never been a technology of how to study.
In the early 1960's L. Ron Hubbard researched the subject and discovered certain simple, basic factors that make the difference between success and failure in study, and he directed that this information be included in the Scientology Handbook, the textbook of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers.
A chapter of this book, "The Technology of Study" has been made into a booklet, used by Volunteer Ministers around the world to help people gain the skill they need to learn any subject.
Community leaders have contacted the volunteers, asking them to provide seminars to teachers and youngsters, so they learn this technology, giving the children of the region the tools they need to excel in whatever career they chose in life.
