In the firm belief that, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights1,” Scientologists of Frankfurt, Germany have decided to make the Universal Declaration of Human Rights real to everyone in their city.

World War I was so savage and brutal it was named the “war to end all wars." Yet a mere twenty years later the world was once again embroiled in global conflict. And in the name of preventing a reoccurrence of the infamous atrocities of World War II, in 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was born, in the realization that — recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.”
But almost 60 years after the Universal Declaration was adopted by the member states of the United Nations, a brief glance at the news demonstrates the harsh truth — that the implementation of the human rights, laid out in this document and its European counterpart, the European Convention on Human Rights, has not been accomplished.
 | | They man info-stands and pass out literature, educating people on human rights. |
In fact, behind the terrorism that we read about or see on TV, behind war, behind child soldiers, sexual trafficking and the worst ills of our society, lies a blatant disregard for human rights as explicitly guaranteed by these documents.
Does this mean that those who dreamed of “a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want,” were only dreamers? Than mankind cannot accomplish this goal?
No.
However, L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the Scientology religion, once wrote: “Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream,” and this was never more true than it is today.
 | | They firmly believe that educating youth in their rights and responsibilities is the only guarantee of peace. |
The fact is, to make this dream come true requires commitment and action, and that can only occur when there is real understanding of human rights and one’s responsibility to ensure these are honored.
A November 1997 Hart Research poll2 found only 8% of those surveyed even knew of the existence of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
German Scientologists are determined to make human rights a fact. They have embraced Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) as the means of accomplishing this.
Youth for Human Rights International was formed in 2001 as an outreach project of the International Foundation for Human Rights and Tolerance, with the purpose, “to educate young people in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights so they become valuable advocates for tolerance and peace.”
To accomplish this, YHRI develops, produces and distributes educational materials to all sectors of society, including schools, private groups and government agencies.
This summer, YHRI released 30 new public service announcements (PSAs), produced for them by the Church of Scientology International, which cover each of the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, making these rights completely understandable.
These films will help accomplish the goal of peace only to the degree that they are seen.
