10 Oct 2006 — La Cañada Boy Scouts Pledge to be Drug-Free

With their commitment to being "physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight," scouts are natural Drug-Free Marshals.

The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated in 1910 and chartered by the US Congress in 1916, to help boys and young adults build character, assume their responsibility as citizens, and develop strong personal integrity.

The Boy Scouts Oath specifically calls on scouts to do their best, help others at all times. To this, a troop of Boy Scouts from La Cañada, California added the commitment this week to live drug-free lives and help their families and friends be drug-free, when they were sworn in as Drug-Free Marshals by the Drug-Free Marshals Coordinator of the Church of Scientology of Los Angeles.

A troop of Boy Scouts from La Canada, California, committed themselves to live drug-free lives and help their families and friends be drug-free, when they were sworn in as Drug-Free Marshals by the Drug-Free Marshals Coordinator of the Church of Scientology of Los Angeles.

They received copies of a new anti-drug booklet called, "The Truth about Drugs."

The booklet informs youth about cocaine, crack and crystal meth, LSD, ecstasy, heroin and marijuana. It also provides important data on a common form of drug abuse in schools -- where kids sell their Ritalin prescriptions to other kids who use the drug to get high. Also known as "kiddy cocaine," Ritalin creates cocaine-like effects when consumed.

The Church of Scientology International has printed five million copies of anti-drug booklets in 20 languages for distribution to schools, governments, police, anti-drug groups and youth organizations.

Scoutmaster, Chris Savage, welcomed his troop's participation and membership in the Drug-Free Marshals, saying, "Young people must become informed about the damage drugs cause. When they know this they will stay away from them."

The Drug-Free Marshals, which was established in Los Angeles in 1993, has spread to thousands of neighborhoods in dozens of countries, with more than three million young people having taken the Drug-Free Marshals pledge over the past 13 years.
