12 Oct 2006 — The Scientology Disaster Relief Team Restoring Hope to the People of Yogyakarta Through the Technology of L. Ron Hubbard

Indonesia: With their trauma a thing of the past, thanks to the work of the Scientology Disaster Relief Team, the children of Yogyakarta are once more cheerful, extroverted and looking forward to the future.

With their trauma a thing of the past, thanks to the work of the Scientology Disaster Relief Team, the children of Yogyakarta are once more cheerful, extroverted and looking forward to the future.

But it was a completely different scene only four short months ago. There were few youths whose lives weren't completely disrupted by the 27 May 2006, 6.3 magnitude earthquake, which killed 5,782 people, injured an estimated 36,299 and left 600,000 homeless — nearly 19% of the entire population.

Arriving in Yogyakarta within days of the cataclysm, members of the Scientology Disaster Relief Team were very familiar with the mental and spiritual damage people who live through such incidents commonly suffer.

Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard, developed Assist technology1 to help the individual overcome the immediate effects of such trauma, and the Scientology volunteers put this technology into immediate use on their arrival in the region.

But Mr. Hubbard also found that it is vital to address the long-term effects of trauma. If not addressed and handled these can scar the individual for life. He discovered Dianetics techniques that actually undo any such lasting effects, and made this information broadly available with the book Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health.

So as soon as the immediate relief work was done, the Scientology team began delivering Dianetics seminars and workshops, to relief workers, health care professionals, churches, mosques, social agencies, entire towns — in short, to anyone who wanted to give or receive help.

Now, four months later, the work of the Scientology Disaster Relief Team has touched the lives on hundreds of thousands of Javanese, with over 13,000 trained in Scientology and Dianetics technology, and using it to help their friends and neighbors.

1: Assists are techniques developed by L. Ron Hubbard. They operate on the principle that one tends to withdraw mentally or spiritually from an injured area. Only by restoring communication with this area can one bring the spiritual element into healing, thereby greatly speeding the healing process. Assists are used to alleviate stress, or to orient a confused or distraught individual to his present environment.
