27 Nov 2006 — Montreal Scientologists Say "Non à la Drogue"

With multi-million dollar mafia drug busts filling recent Montreal headlines and local groups so desperate on the subject that they have all but given up on helping people stay off drugs or overcome their addiction, local Scientologists are committed to helping their city with this urgent problem.

Five million copies of anti-drug booklets and brochures were printed in Canada through a grant from the International Association of Scientologists.

Members of the Church of Scientology of Montreal, determined to bring effective solutions to the attention of their neighbors, are out on the street, talking to children, teenagers, parents and other concerned individuals, and distributing copies of a new series of drug prevention booklets about heroin, crack, cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy and other frequently abused drugs.

The booklets give factual information on the effect of each drug, and real-life stories from former addicts, to counter the pro-drug propaganda kids are subjected to from proponents and peers.

"From the day I started using, I never stopped," one heroin addict states. "Within one week I had gone from snorting heroin to shooting it. Within one month I was addicted and going through all my money. I sold everything of value that I owned and eventually everything that my mother owned. Within one year, I had lost everything."

A former cocaine addict had a similar story. "I sold my car, lost my job, was kicked out of my mother's house, was $25,000 in credit card debt, and living on the street."

In addition to hard-hitting factual information like this on the effect of drugs, the booklets also provide tips to young people on how to avoid getting into the trap of addiction, and information on effective drug-rehabilitation programs for those who need help.

Five million copies of these new anti-drug booklets and brochures were printed in Canada, through a grant from the International Association of Scientologists. These have been shipped to anti-drug groups all over the world, to get the word out to the young people in their communities.

Now, to ensure the message reaches everyone who needs this information, a new foundation has been created —the "Foundation for a Drug-Free World" — a secular non-profit organization based in Los Angeles, California.

The Foundation was established to meet the increasing demand for the "Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life" community drug prevention program, which members of Scientology churches and other volunteer organizations have been conducting for over 20 years around the world.
