Although Children's Day was established in 1954 by the United Nations General Assembly as a day to honor children, to millions of impoverished youngsters there is no difference between this day and any other.
 | | Learning about study technology developed by L. Ron Hubbard Mohammad Khalil Ullah has established free study centers to give children in the slums of Kolkata, India a chance to succeed in life. |
In India, 135 million children do not attend school. That means that with no prospect for gaining the skills school can provide for them, the equivalent of nearly half the population of the entire United States has little prospect of ever moving themselves out of the poverty that dominates their lives.
When the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tour arrived in Kolkata, earlier this year, one of the first people they met was Mohammad Khalil Ullah, a humanitarian who has been working to improve the lives of his people.
Through a program he established, called the Renaissance School, he has been providing coaching to adults who need to learn the English language to advance their education and skills.
But his real passion is to help the youth of Kolkata, and he would spend every Sunday working with childen in the slums who had no other prospect for an education.
When he learned from the Scientology Volunteer Ministers about the technology of study that L. Ron Hubbard developed, Mr. Ullah realized he had the tools he needed to accomplish his dream.
He founded the first of a series of free study centers in the heart of the slums of Kolkata, where he built this study technology into the program.
This year on Children's Day more than one hundred children at each of these schools had something to special to celebrate. Not only were they were provided gifts to help them with their studies — new exercise books, slates, pencils, pens, and even clothes for those in need — but the best gift of all is the gift of a bright future, through effective education.
