The Church of Scientology International European Office of Public Affairs and Human Rights hosted a symposium in honor of Human Rights Day 2006. In keeping with this year's Human Rights Day theme — Fighting Poverty: a Matter of Obligation, Not Charity — the program began with a civil society forum, titled: "An Effective Solution To Poverty? Making Human Rights A Fact."

The forum took up the issue that in many cases it is the denial of human rights and human dignity that contribute to and are responsible for poverty - racial, ethnic, religious and gender discrimination were cited as some of the most significant factors in preventing whole segments of the population from improving their financial condition.

A series of human rights public service announcements (PSAs) were shown. Produced by Youth for Human Rights International and funded by a grant from the International Association of Scientologists, these PSAs made an impact on the attendees who recognized their value in undercutting bias and prejudice that blocks the advancement of whole sectors of society.
