Living in the shadow of the Mayon Volcano, in an area known as "typhoon alley," the people of Albay Province on the Island of Luzon in the Philippines are no strangers to disaster. But that doesn't make it any easier when disaster strikes.

Since early December, the Scientology Disaster Relief Team has been working one-on-one with those who survived Typhoon Durian, which killed hundreds and displaced hundreds of thousands from their homes.
With seminars and workshops based on the Scientology Handbook and the book Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health by L. Ron Hubbard, they are giving men, women and even children tools by which they can put these painful experiences behind them.
Here are a few of the hundreds of stories of those helped by the Scientology Disaster Relief Team and Dianetics spiritual counseling techniques.
A young woman overcame her trauma by recounting the story of taking cover in her house with her parents. As much rain had come down in 8 hours as usually falls in 6 months. When the water was 5 feet high inside the room, her father gave up and ordered the family to find higher ground. With 130 mph winds tearing through the village she swam across the raging torrent, miraculously making it to the shore, only to see her mother carried off by the river.
A 19 year old described how she felt before she found the Scientology Disaster Relief Team. "I almost gave up! Each of us experiences a feeling that you almost want to surrender. I thought — I can't continue living life with darkness in my mind. How can I ease the pain? Now, I understand my feelings and things in my environment more clearly. I now have hope, aspirations and goals. I always cried when I remembered the moments of sorrow in my life, but now I have gained strength to face what lies ahead! I have peace of mind." She has now trained as a Volunteer Minister and is working with the Disaster Relief Team, supervising workshops in the local villages.
And here is what others attending these workshops have experienced.
"I learned so much from you, which I really want to share with my family. This is the greatest workshop I've ever had. Thanks so much and God bless you always."
"I am thankful that we had a workshop here. Because of this I learned so many things I can use with my townspeople and others who will need this kind of help."
"This workshop really helps to lessen the pain I felt from tragedy in my life."
