To any parent this will be a familiar scenario - your child is so distraught he or she can't even explain to you what the problem is, but can only cry.
 | | The Scientology Volunteer Ministers Central European Goodwill Tour has been delivering training based on the Scientology Handbook for the past several months, and training Volunteer Ministers to continue their work after the tour moves on to its next location. |
But as Adrian, one of the new Scientology Volunteer Ministers in Romania learned this week, L. Ron Hubbard's discoveries, described in the Scientology Handbook, are like magic when it comes to helping a youngster come through such an upset.
In the chapter of the Handbook titled "How to Live with Children," which has also been published as a booklet by the same name, Mr. Hubbard describes a process he calls "Tell Me About It," where one simply has the child recount what upset him, describing what he experienced as he goes through it. And here is how Adrian described what happened when he used this to help his young daughter.
When he arrived home his child was overcome with grief. He asked the child's grandmother what had happened but she herself couldn't understand what had set this off. Adrian coaxed the little girl into telling him about it. At first she wouldn't talk or listen but as she started to run through the incident, telling him what she was looking at, what she was hearing at the time, what she was thinking as it happened, she stopped sobbing, became calmer, and finally brightened right up. In the end she was cheerful and completely unaffected by what had made her so distressed just moments before.
How long would it have taken for her to come through this on her own? There's no way to tell. But the whole previous half hour of crying had failed to alleviate what this technique handled in a few minutes.
Adrian learned this technique when he visited the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Central European Goodwill Tour in Romania. And he is certainly glad he did!
