The World Police and Fire Games are a biennial international sports event rivaling the Olympics in scope and participation. Held each time in a different location in the world, this year the event is taking place in Adelaide, Australia, where police officers, firefighters, customs and correction officers from around the world are competing in 65 different events. And this year, a team of Volunteer Ministers from the Scientology churches of Australia are there to help these athletes accomplish their best possible performances.

In the aggressive competition of world-class games, injuries are common and devastating, as they can spell the difference between triumph and defeat for contestants who train to peak for these games.

Through the course of his research, Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard, developed a whole body of technology called "Assists." These address the mental and spiritual aspects of a person's physical difficulties, and those who learn about this technology are usually amazed at how fast assists help people recover from accidents, injuries or illnesses, by addressing the mental and spiritual factors that cause or prolong these problems.
Take one coach who walked into the bright yellow tent of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers this week. His frustration over the injury of one of his best men was only rivaled by the disappointment of the athlete himself. But they both knew there was no way the athlete could compete, with his ankle swollen to more than twice its normal size. They'd heard about a procedure called a "Touch Assist," and decided it was worth a try.
The purpose of the Touch Assist is to reestablish communication with injured or ill parts of the body. The technique is based on the principle that the way to heal or remedy anything is to establish communication with it.
And so the Volunteer Minister began the assist. Less than an hour later, the swelling and pain were gone and the athlete was back in the game!
But as helpful as assists are for the competitors, this was not the main reason the Scientology Volunteer Ministers set up their tent at the World Police and Fire Games this year.
Working in close cooperation with police officers, firefighters and emergency response personnel at times of disasters in countries around the world, the Volunteer Ministers have come to realize that they have tools these brave men and women need.
Scientology Volunteer Ministers were there, helping the rescue workers at Ground Zero in New York. They worked alongside relief workers after the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand. It was Scientology Volunteer Ministers who cared for the emergency response personnel working for days on end, around the clock in the flooded streets of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. They were there at the Yogyakarta earthquake, Queensland's Cyclone Larry, the Philippines's Typhoon Durian and Mozambique's Cyclone Favio. And they know, from first-hand experience, what it takes to restore order and help survivors overcome the trauma of incidents like these.
From this experience has come a new service called "Scientology Disaster Response Training," which is expressly designed to help the very men who are gathered in Adelaide, competing at the World Police and Fire Games. And although it is simple to do this training that is based on the Scientology Handbook, the results have "gold medal" value.
"Whenever natural disaster takes place the situation used to be very deadly and horrible," said a recent graduate who participated in this training in Mumbai, India last month. "At that point, by using these drills we can easily handle the situation."
"Now I can assist people to overcome trauma," said another graduate. "It helps me to help someone."
