Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VMs) who are specialists in trauma relief have left for Gizo in the Solomon Islands to help the area recover from the earthquake and tsunami that left the island devastated last Monday.
Reports from the island indicate more aid is needed but is slow to arrive; the need for fresh drinking water is becoming urgent. Vehicle shortages and a lack of workers to load trucks or clear debris has hampered the relief effort. And dysentery cases have been reported among those displaced by the disaster.
Hundreds of local residents are living in squalid conditions in hills behind the town, with more than 5,000 throughout the region left homeless.
The earthquake struck 345 kilometers northwest of the country's capital, Honiara. Smaller aftershocks have continued to occur.
"Aftershocks are really hard on earthquake victims," said one of the VMs who has volunteered at several disaster sites this year and plans to give workshops in Scientology assist technology as soon as the immediate clean-up operation is under control. "Each time the earth starts to shake, they feel like they've been thrown back in time to when the earthquake was taking place. That's why we try to get them Scientology assists as soon as we can." Scientology assists are simple procedures developed by L. Ron Hubbard that help people overcome the emotional and spiritual side of trauma, so they can recover fully from injury, stress or shock.
Over the past year Australian Volunteer Ministers have provided disaster relief after the Yogyakarta earthquake, Jakarta floods, Philippines typhoon and Australian bush fires.
