26 Apr 2007 — Celebrating the Anniversary of the Publication of Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health

Dianetics the Modern Science of Mental Health
Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health, is approaching its 57th year in print. Published on May 9th, 1950, this year its anniversary will be marked by celebrations in more that 160 nations all over the world.

And why not? Dianetics technology is simple to understand and learn; anyone can get a copy of the book and start using it; and the results are remarkable, even in the hands of people completely new to the subject.

Within weeks of its May 9th, 1950 release it topped the New York Times bestseller list and gave rise to some 750 Dianetics groups.

The book emerged in the aftermath of World War II as the temperature of the Cold War was plummeting. It had been only five years since atomic weapons had been used against Japan. In the five intervening years the "nuclear arms race" had begun, with the Soviet Union's testing of its first atomic weapon in August of 1949.

But there was another race, described by L. Ron Hubbard in the final pages of the book:

"Man is now faced, by these pyramiding hatreds, with weapons so powerful that man himself may vanish from the earth. There is no problem in the control of these weapons. They explode when and where man tells them to explode. The problem is in the control of man."

The international situation has changed. It is no longer the USA versus the USSR, but the threats are just as real and the stakes as high. Terrorism, global warming, poverty, the AIDS pandemic; all of these are man-caused and capable of resolution.

Mr. Hubbard's statement in the last chapter of the Dianetics book could have been written today:

"There are no international concerns which cannot be resolved by peaceable means, not in terms of supranational government, but in terms of reason."

And he further stated:

"Man's primary fight is not with man—that is insanity. Man's primary fight is with those elements which oppress him as a species and bar his thrust towards high goals. Man's fight is with the elements, with space and time, and with species which are destructive to him. He has hardly begun his conquest."

Scientology churches and missions around the world make the Dianetics book and training in the form of Dianetics seminars and workshops available to their communities. In one weekend, those with a desire to improve things can be on their way to resolving those aspects of their lives that are holding them back. And Dianetics techniques in the hands of Scientology Volunteer Ministers and those they train are used for trauma relief in disaster zones everywhere on Earth.

"There is a higher goal, a better goal, a more glorious victory than gutted towns and radiation-burned dead. There is freedom and happiness and plenty and a whole universe to be won."

"How much can man conquer? He loses if he conquers man. He wins if he conquers his own fears and conquers then the stars."L. Ron Hubbard.
