The BMO (Bank of Montreal) Vancouver Marathon is a world-class race, planned, organized and run entirely by volunteers. The Vancouver International Marathon Society, a non-profit, volunteer-based organization, relies entirely on its more than 1700 volunteers to make it a success. A member of the Association of International Marathons and Road Races (A.I.M.S.) the Society has been wholly responsible for the staging of this event since the its inception.

Over the past 36 years, the Vancouver International Marathon has become a local institution. It began in 1972, when 72 runners ran five loops around Vancouver's Stanley Park. It has evolved into a major international competition. By contrast, in 2007, 12,631 runners and walkers finished the race that followed a course throughout the city, with a truly international field led by Thomas Omwenga (Kenya) and Claudia Camargo (Argentina).
The Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology of Vancouver, British Columbia, participate in the race, taking on any functions needed to help ensure it is a complete success.
This year, their work was acknowledged with a very special award. They were named the 2007 Volunteers of the Year in this message from the organizers of the event:
"It is our pleasure to present the 2007 Volunteer of the Year title to the Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers of BC. The Volunteer Ministers donated their time as Catchers, Vector Bar stations helpers, Course Marshals, Timing Chip Removal and Blanket Distribution crews for the BMO Bank of Montreal Vancouver Marathon. The Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers of BC did an amazing job from start to finish. They were enthusiastic, friendly, efficient, and were always ready to lend a helping hand. Congratulations to the Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers of BC!"

L. Ron Hubbard once wrote, "A being is only as valuable as he can serve others," and these Vancouver Scientologists have shown by their actions that they are very valuable indeed.
