After more than 20 years of strife, Namibia won its independence from South Africa in 1990 and looked forward to a better future for its people. But with 30-40% unemployed, 11% HIV positive and an estimated 135,000 Namibian children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, the nation faces serious challenges and needs help. In fact, Namibia ranks 125th out of 177 countries in the United Nations Human Development Index, which measures life expectancy, education and standard of living.
Students at the Kuisebmond Secondary School in Namibia were engrossed in their studies under the supervision of the Volunteer Ministers team.
Aware of the situations that confront Namibia, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Africa Goodwill Tour arrived in Windheok, the capital of the country, where they surveyed city police, emergency, disaster and crime prevention units, the Red Cross, nurses at the state hospital and youth council groups from the city and surrounding townships. They introduced them to the Scientology Handbook, the textbook of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers program, and the broad array of subjects the book includes to help individuals and groups do better in life.
When the student has mastered study technology there are no limits to what he or she can learn.
From their surveys, they found Scientology assist technology was in high demand. Assists are processes, developed by L. Ron Hubbard, that help the individual overcome trauma and address the spiritual and emotional component in healing.
Learning study technology gives students the edge they need in today's competitive marketplace.
The tour immediately began training volunteers on assist technology. One ecstatic student shared how he has been able to use what he learned with his terminally ill AIDS patients. These simple processes not only brought his patients relief but hope as well.
In the city of Swakopmund, Namibia, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tour provided disaster relief training to the fire brigade.
The Volunteer Ministers are also training educators and students on study technology, as knowing how to study gives students the edge they need in today's competitive marketplace. Study technology doesn't just focus on one subject but rather applies to studying anything. No matter how difficult or technical a subject may be, there are three barriers to studying it. When the student has mastered the techniques and can overcome these barriers there are no limits to what he or she can learn.
At the Grand Opening of the Volunteer Ministers tent in Windheok, the Chief of Police was one of the speakers welcoming the tour to his country. He thanked the volunteers for training his own staff and those of other organizations in Namibia and he urged everyone attending to take advantage of the training the VMs offer.
Those attending the training were eager to learn skills they can use to help the people of their communities.
Some thirty years ago L. Ron Hubbard inspired an entire movement, now comprising more than 100,000 volunteers all over the world, when he wrote: "If one is going to find fault with something, it implies that he wishes to do something about it and would if he could. If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a Volunteer Minister and help civilize it, bring it conscience and kindness and love and freedom from travail by instilling into it trust, decency, honesty and tolerance."
Online training is now available to any individual or group who wants to help people. For more information visit the Volunteer Ministers web site.
