12 Mar 2008 — Scientology Volunteer Ministers of West Bengal Help Victims of Kolkata Slum Fire

When fire broke out in Panchanna Village , the thatched roofs of the bamboo structures fed the blaze resulting in nearly 600 shanties being destroyed in that East Kolkata slum on Monday.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers of West Bengal joined forces with other volunteers and relief workers to assist the fire crews, maintain order and provide help to the victims of Sunday's fire in an East Kolkata slum.

"The fire soon spread to the entire slum area as it housed highly inflammable household items like LPG [liquefied petroleum gas] cylinders, plastics and garments," said West Bengal Fire Services Director Gopal Bhattacharya, adding that no casualties were reported.

Firefighters finally brought the blaze under control after battling it through the night.

Rescue workers and volunteers rallied to set up temporary shelters for the victims and food was provided to over 2,000 homeless slum-dwellers.

The fire, which broke out in one house, quickly spread throughout the slum, igniting and exploding some 50 gas cylinders.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers of West Bengal joined forces with other relief workers to assist the fire crews, maintain order and provide help to those affected by the disaster.
