Miracles are commonplace, for Scientology Volunteer Ministers who are trained to give Scientology assists.

Scientology assists are techniques developed by L. Ron Hubbard that speed healing by addressing the spiritual component of illness and injury. The Scientology Handbook gives the following description of Scientology assists, showing the purpose of the techniques:
"In Scientology an assist is an action undertaken to help a person confront physical difficulties. If a child has fallen and hurt himself, an assist can help him overcome the trauma. If a person has a toothache or has had a tooth pulled, an assist can help relieve the pain. When people are ill, assists can ease the discomfort and speed recovery. Even broken bones respond to assists. These and many other conditions can be improved by application of procedures classified under this heading of 'Assists.'"
"By spiritual means, but means which are as precise as mathematics, a host of bad conditions of life may be remedied in Scientology. Illness and malfunction can be divided into two general classes. First, those resulting from the operation of the spirit directly upon the communication networks of life or the body and, second, those occasioned by the disruption of structure through purely physical causes.
"The term psychosomatic means the mind making the body ill or illnesses which have been created physically within the body by derangement of the mind. Psycho refers to mind and somatic refers to body."
"The only truly therapeutic agent in this universe is the spirit. In Scientology this has been demonstrated with more thoroughness and exists with more certainty than the physical sciences or mathematics. A Scientologist can help make an individual well and happy simply by addressing the human spirit."
Armed with knowledge of how to perform assists, and a real commitment to helping their fellow man, Scientology Volunteer Ministers accomplish what others routinely refer to as miraculous results.
A typical example was reported by the leader of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tour currently in Ghana. A nurse who had been trained in assist technology helped her patient recover far more quickly than anyone could imagine.

"Felicia, a nurse from the surgery ward gave an assist to a person who was in great pain from an elbow rupture—he almost couldn't move. The result was that person said he felt the pain was being pulled out from his arm. But, looking at the condition of the man's elbow I estimated he would need some more assists. So, when late in the afternoon another student was on the final practical assignment of his Assist Course I decided to take him to the hospital to give elbow rupture case more assists. We went there but there was no point in our doing so. The patient was wondering what the heck we wanted. He was doing fine, and could move his arm with ease."
