4 Jul 2008 — La Puente Community Supports International Day Against Drug Abuse

Eleven years ago the United Nations passed a resolution to set aside one day a year to unite groups all over the world to raise awareness of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. On a sizzling Southern California afternoon, La Puente Park celebrated the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World, a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles, California, provided copies of the "Truth About Drugs" booklet series and the Drug Free Marshals were also on hand. One of the most popular elements of the Foundation's drug prevention program, the Drug-Free Marshals take their name from the U.S. marshals popularized in novels and movies about the American West. These men went from town to town and spread civilization into lawless areas and were respected as a force for good. The The Drug-Free Marshals "deputize" youngsters to pledge to live drug-free lives and show their friends that it is more fun to be that way.

The Church of Scientology of Pasadena, which uses the Foundation's materials in their community drug awareness programs, participated in the day's festivities. "When people have the facts, they can't be fooled or lied to, and they will make positive decisions for their lives," said Eden Stein, president of the Church. "The Truth About Drugs booklets make it easy for anyone to be smart about drugs."

To get free copies of their drug education materials, visit the web site of the Foundation for a Drug Free World.
